At Detroit Porsche presented motor sport version of the 918 Spyder. The two-seater mid-engine coupé 918 RSR combines the technology of 911 GT3 R Hybrid and the design of the 918 Spyder. Presented car is part of the “Porsche Intelligent Performance”, uses a KERS system (kinetic energy recovery system) developed by the Williams F1 racing team. Unlike the recently popular hybrid systems, 918 RSR does not use batteries. The essence of the system is flywheel accumulator, an electric motor whose rotor rotates at up to 36,000 rpm to store rotation energy. Charging occurs when the two electric motors on the front axle reverse their function during braking processes and operate as generators. With the push of one button the pilot delivers power of 204 horsepower for a time of 8 seconds, which should help in acceleration or overtaking. Chief V8 petrol engine is rated 563 hp at 10 300 rpm and drive the rear wheels. The total power of the Porsche 918 RSR Coupe is 767 hp.
Race number 22 is in honor of Dr. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep were the first to cross the finishing line in 1971′s 24-hour classic. The distance record set by their Porsche 917 short-tail coupé – 5335.313 kilometers (3315.21 miles) at an average speed of 222.304 km / h (138.13 mph). As yet, still no detailed information about acceleration data of the model. The price of model also has not yet been announced, but probably the amount would be around $ 500,000.
