At the Qatar Motor Show (26-29 January 2011) VW officially unveiled a prototype XL1. Super-efficient model of the German company was able to travel 1000 km with less than 1 liter fuel (261 mpg). Conceptually, the XL1 represents the third evolutionary stage of Volkswagen’s one-litre car strategy. First model was appeared in 2002 and has a diesel engine with a cylinder volume of 0.3 liters and power of 8.5 hp., Its average fuel consummation was 0.89 liters per 1000 km. Then, in 2009 VW showed L1, which was a two-cylinder diesel with a volume of 0.8 liters. Its fuel consumption was 1.49 liters per 100 km.
Current XL1 is powered by two cylinder TDI engine (35 kW / 48 PS) plus E-motor (20 kW / 27 PS). Lithium-ion battery capable to supply energy to the E-motor for 35 kilometers. The gearbox is a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG). At the heart of the unique fuel consummation is lightweight construction, combination of monocoque and add-on parts made of carbon fibre, with total weight of just 795 kg and very low aerodynamic drag (Cd 0.186). XL1 attains a CO2 emissions value of only 24 g / km.
Representatives of Volkswagen stated that the development of XL1 price is significantly reduced and their view is approaching the time when such super-efficient vehicle will become viable for serial production.
